HMCS Snowberry was originally commissioned with the Royal Navy though she was constructed in Canada. She was launched on August 8, 1940 at Lauzon, Quebec and commissioned into the RN on November 26, 1940. She sailed to the UK the following February and was completed in Greenock, Scotland in April 1941. On May 15, 1941,
Snowberry was one of ten Flower class corvettes loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy. Snowberry was assigned to convoy escort and anti-submarine duties.
