Description

Elco 70ft PT boat kit (x1). 3D printed hull and detail parts included.

Beginning in January 1940, the Naval Division of Elco (formally, the Electric Boat Company) at Bayonne, New Jersey, began manufacturing the flist production class of
U.S. PT boats: the PT-1 0-19 class of 70-foot boats. The PT-1 0-19 class featured a hull similar to that of PT-9, but the cabin (or canopy) was redesigned. The pilot house was
also larger than that of the PT-9. The boat's keel was hand-hewn Alaskan Spruce, and the stem American Oak. The frames, as well as the hull planking, were African Mahogany.

The hull and deck were constructed of double layers of planking laid diagonally, with airplane fabric impregnated with marine glue sandwiched between the layers for extra
strength and watertighness. In addition to four 18-inch torpedo rubes, the boats were armed with ~o Dutch-made Dewandre hydraulically powered twin-.50-caliber machine
gun turrets with Plexiglas canopies. Three Packard 4M-2500 1 ,200-horsepower V-12 engines powered the boat, which was capable of speeds up to 39 knots. The center engine
was direct drive, whereas each side engine drove its propeller through a V-drive. At top speed, each engine consumed about 150 gallons of 100-0ctane gasoline per hour.

The 10 boats of this class saw combat, but not under the American flag. Turned over to Great Britain under Lend-Lease, they became the 1 Orh Motor Torpedo Boar Florilla. The vessels were renumbered MTB 259 through 268, and served in rhe Mediterranean. A number of modifications were made to the boats to render them suitable for service in the Royal Navy.
