Description
Fairmile C Type motor launch kit (x1).
3D printed hull and detail parts, photoetch, brass and decals elements included.
The Fairmile C Type motor gunboat was essentially an improved A Type motor launch design. By the summer of 1940, the Royal Navy had a shortage of escorts and there was also a fear of an invasion of England by German forces. The Type D motor gunboat was still in the design phase, so it was decided to take advantage of the Type A
building jigs still available as an interim solution to the MGB shortage. The Type C bridge was redesigned to take up less deck area, the foc’sle width reduced and fuel capacity increased. As MGBs, the armament was greatly improved. A total of 24 C Type MGBs were built.
MGB 314 was part of the covering force for the famous St. Nazaire raid, where the ex-USN destroyer HMS Campbeltown was to ram the lock gates and then detonate explosives to destroy it. MGB 314 and the other coastal forces boats and launches were to land commandos who were to destroy port installations. MGB 314 was severely damaged during the raid and had to be scuttled on the return voyage when she encountered bad weather. An additional four C Type boats were lost in action.
