Description
Elco 77ft PT boat (pennant number 20-44) kit (x1). 3D printed hull and detail parts included.
The 49 77-foot boats of the PT-20-68 class were the first PT boats to see combat under the American flag. Their design was lengthened in response to the need to mount four 21-inch torpedo tubes of U.S. design, something the earlier 70-foot boats could not readily accommodate. The first boats in this class delivered to the U.S. Navy, including the one shown here, lacked torpedo tubes because of material shortages.
On the morning of 7 December 1941, boats PT-20 through 25, assigned to RON 1, were tied up at the U.S. submarine base at Pearl Harbor. From there, two of PT-23's gunners claimed two Japanese aircraft downed. Across the base, six more of RON 1 's boats were in the process of being transferred to RON 3, and were being loaded for transit to the Philippines. Although surviving the attack, their transfer was cancelled and they were instead based at Pearl. Four of RON 3's six boats (PT 32, 34, 35, and 41) would rise to great fame for evacuating General Douglas MacArthur from Corregidor in the Philippines and were immortalized in the 194 5 movie "They Were Expendable.''
